DC Archives Message Board • Bonus DC Time Capsule: June 1958

In our bonus capsule, we’ll travel back to the dawn of the Silver Age, June of 1958, where we’ll find “The Purple People Eater”, “The Defiant Ones” and Pelé, while DC gave us the first Supergirl, “The Lady and the Lion”, and “Superboy’s Last Day”!

3rd - Referendum allows city of Los Angeles to sell Chavez Ravine to the Dodgers
 
7th - American songwriter and impresario Berry Gordy Jr. founds Tamla Records, precursor to Motown Records, in Detroit, Michigan
 
7th - In a landmark in medical imaging, the British medical journal The Lancet publishes the paper "Investigation of Abdominal Masses by Pulsed Ultrasound", by obstetricians Dr. Ian Donald and John MacVicar, and medical physicist T. G. Brown detailing the first use of medical ultrasound for diagnosing problems of an unborn child still in the womb
 
16th - The Wham-O toy company begins marketing of the "Hula hoop",
 
17th - "Things Fall Apart" by Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe published by Heinemann - considered most widely read book in African literature
 
23rd - Dutch Reformed Church accepts women ministers
